Winner of March 2010 Portobello Competition

A Bathroom Makeover arrived at the perfect moment for this to-be-wed couple to suit their newly-renovated home.

A distinctive choice of the bold yet delicate Portobello™ Vogue Blanc and Vogue Noir tiles was to flatter a modern and sleek style that suited the couple's personal taste. Although straightforward and minimal was the idea for this bathroom's style, the Vogue range fashionably set a towering bar of elegance combined with modernism.

Long and straight floor-to-ceiling lines of white Vogue intercepted by short, repetitive dashes of grey, created absolute awareness of the height & features within the space.

The subtle use of tiles in this space created a striking impression which united with the Blanc-Noir characteristics. This reveals that one does not have to exaggerate design in order to make a statement.

MINIMAL TILE USAGE CREATES AN ARTWORK

Warren and Andy Kopelowitz's house was in renovation phase when they won the Ferreiras Bathroom Makeover Competition. This allowed the design of the bathroom to start fresh and compliment the overall renovation of the house. This meant conserving interesting features from the old house: the stone wall in the entrance hall and around the fireplace in the lounge, as well as the individual face brick north walls in each of the bedrooms. The holistic feel of the newly renovated house was light, spacious and restful with an overall neutral palette.

In this bathroom we were faced with a long rectangular shape and high ceilings which created intriguing design features. By making use of minimal tiles and creating long vertical lines onto the walls with decor tiles it allowed the design feature of height and space to be emphasized. Neutral colours were used in the Portobello ™ tile selection and an interesting combination of textures and placement of the tiles allowed the bathroom to compliment the holistic feel.

Inspired by contemporary finishes, Portobello has introduced a range of porcelain tiles with a rich, textured and unmistakable natural finish.

This served as the stimulation for creating the Portobello Bathroom.

The beautiful wood and stone finishes radiate into the Bathroom, creating an atmosphere of natural vigour. The purity of the layout serves to incite a broad sense of space. Sanitary-ware with graceful detail emphasizes the wholesomeness of the naturalistic palette. Strong uncontaminated lines contribute to experience of this area and create a clean, detailed finish.

A definite requirement was to have a no mess no fuss approach and the combination of these elements creates a holistic, minimalistic experience.

The brief from the client was to capture the simplicity and elegance of the 1906 Bear Lodge National Heritage Site which they are proud to call home.

To accentuate the era of the building the Versace Black and White Palace Stone tiles were used in the design. The simplicity and classical elegance of the tiles brought an exciting contemporary edge to the Edwardian home.

The tile design introduced subtle detail items from the Versace™ range, making use of the diagonal checker board floor, and various torrellos, mosaic and listellos with the Versace™ Greca motif. The classical slipper bath and intricate vanity add grandeur and grace to the bathroom. The final touch was the lighting in the chandelier and wall lights, both featuring Edwardian style.

Versace has long been synonymous with elegance, style and timeless design. It was thus just a natural association to apply these principled traits to the physical design of the Versace Bathroom.

The original space was, from a design perspective, uncomfortable and structurally undesirable. This presented the most challenging obstacle, and resulted in a complete re-evaluation and re- imagination of the desired goals.

The bathroom boasts a palette of earthly hues and neutral tones. The finest porcelain imparts the space with an unmistakable texture and sensory quality. Strong horizontal lines and delicate verticals with specific focal points all contribute to the experience of this specific space.

Attention to detail brings this bathroom to life and encourages interaction. Functionally and visually, this bathroom appeals to the humanistic desire of rejuvenation.
